One of my favorite spots in Milwaukee to photograph weddings– or just attend events, period–is Turner Hall Ballroom on Milwaukee’s Old World Third Street downtown. This sweeping, two story venue offers dramatic views and crumbling, rustic elegance in a historic setting. The room is pretty cool to begin with, but throw in a few strings of bulbs and a little uplighting, and the place becomes incredible.
I met up with Lara and Mark to photograph their September Turner Hall wedding. The dressing rooms and upstairs lounge area are a photographer’s dream– covered with old wood work, peeling paint and tons of amazing textures everywhere. It’s a perfectly contrasting backdrop for a glamorous wedding party!
Mark is a fan of classic cars, and wanted to incorporate a few shots of his gold Trans Am into the photos. We set up photos with the couple and their car parked in front of the building exterior, and even managed to get a few from the backseat!
After a candle lit afternoon ceremony, we climbed to the attic and the roof for a few more photos. One of the coolest and most unusual backdrops that we encountered was a pile of antique wooden chairs piled high in an empty attic space.
The newlyweds partied with friends and family into the night, tearing up the ballroom dance floor with some energetic dance moves and a circle dance to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” It was truly a night to remember!
